This week’s live puppy chat with Warrior Canine Connection’s Molly Morelli was full of updates and other insights unique to Molly’s expertise. Thanks for joining us; hope to see you next Tuesday at 7:00 pm ET.

crowie Molly, when will Derecho have his stitches removed?

WarriorCanineConnection Derecho will have his stitches in until his head grows enough that his eyelid no longer rolls in. I am taking him in sometime this week to have them checked to be sure all is well.

Puppy Fan Molly, how is Olive doing? Thank you :)

WarriorCanineConnection Olive is doing great! I still don’t know if she is pregnant or not. We will know one way or the other next week. All fingers crossed pleased.

mhennan Molly, are you still planning to crate Sandy in the house if she is cleared of UTI, or after treated for?

WarriorCanineConnection I could crate Sandy…but I like going to bed early and not worrying about staying up to crate her :-)

lynnesky Which WCC dogs will be Menlo Park?

WarriorCanineConnection We have one dog already in Menlo Park. A black lab named Sonny. I am trying to decide if I will send someone from here or if I will get another puppy to send there. Probably one of Olive’s (or whatever our next litter is) will go there as well.

doglove How much would you say Sandy weighs?

WarriorCanineConnection Sandy is around 10lbs.

Maxi Hi Molly. Has Macy taken to Ruby, Lucy and Penny more now that they are a bit older?

WarriorCanineConnection Macy just doesn’t like dogs in her face. She happily coexists with other dogs if she can pretend they are not there. Once the pups are bigger and ahve more sense about them they read her body language and stay away.

crowie So how much has Sandy gained since she arrived then, approx?

WarriorCanineConnection I don’t know. She was 10 lbs when she went to the vet. She might be more now.

lynnesky Are you enjoying having HHD “girls?” It seems very lively there!

WarriorCanineConnection Lucy went back home today. Penny as it turns out is not actually in heat so she is going back to training tomorrow or Thursday.

WarriorCanineConnection I don’t mind the dogs but this many can be overwhelming when it comes to the mud.

mhennan That reminds me…do you prefer regular towels to microfiber-type towels for drying off the dogs/pups?

WarriorCanineConnection We just use regular bath towels.

brandy’smom Do you agree with some of us that think Sandy will make the perfect Service Dog, or is she still too young to tell?

GoldenGirl1950 Molly I love how you embrace Macy for who she is. I have a soft spot for older goldens.

Maxi I have a soft spot for Macy too and that’s why I always ask for her.

PegSharp Is there a time frame for how long Sandy will be @ WCC?

WarriorCanineConnection I think Sandy is doing fantastic. I’d say for another one to two weeks. Once I have date I will announce it and where she will be going.

Beagleluv Does Derecho have a FB page yet?

WarriorCanineConnection I need to set D’s page up. I will do that tonight.

Paws2luv Do you know if the Menlo Park location will be having Puppy Petters? A few of us live not far from there.

WarriorCanineConnection No Puppy Petters there because there will not be litters born there. We will be looking for Puppy Parents and Puppy Sitters.

lynnesky Has Sandy had an “official” WCC picture taken yet?

WarriorCanineConnection We did Sandy’s photo on Friday and I need to get that to Miss Zazzle.

doglove Cadence seems to be doing great from the photos posted on her FB page…how is her progress?

WarriorCanineConnection Cadence is doing great!

WhatUp I see Sandy still has a harness on, does she have to have on all night ???

WarriorCanineConnection I think Cheryl forgot to take Sandy’s harness off. I’ll head out after the chat to do that.

KathyMacKnight How’s Mia?

WarriorCanineConnection Mia is on the mend. I am tired of colds but happy she is a healthy kid otherwise.

Jersey Girl I notice Sandy doesn’t eat all her food at one time….I never saw a puppy do that, is this normal?

WarriorCanineConnection Yes, she has no competition so she doesn’t feel the need to inhale her food. Also, she is gets SO many training treats she simply isn’t hungry.

Puppy Fan Any good advise for getting thru the 9 month - 1 year phase?? My pup is a handful!

WarriorCanineConnection Group obedience classes. They need the socialization and extra structure during that age.

pj Are you seeing any signs that Olive may surely be pregnant?

WarriorCanineConnection pj – I am surely one of the most superstitious people I know when it comes to breeding. I don’t like to look at or talk about signs because I fear it will jinx things. I know, silly.

mhennan Molly, with the PEC in full action how long would new puppies remain inside in the whelping box?

WarriorCanineConnection The pups will sleep inside in Mia’s room (with me next to them) for at least the first 3 weeks. Once Puppy Petting starts they will be brought down to the PEC into a whelping box down there.

Puppy Fan Didn’t you say at 1 point that those ‘teenage years are the hardest??’

WarriorCanineConnection Yes, teenage years ARE hard.

Gayle M – MA Molly, what is the success rate of these inseminations?

WarriorCanineConnection I’d say 95%…pretty high. You just don’t often have a good reason for a girl to miss. Just like you don’t always have a good reason for a human to miscarry or miss.

WarriorCanineConnection So far only Grace has come into season.

puproar What about Penny?

WarriorCanineConnection I was told Penny was in season but when I picked her up she wasn’t.

doglove Has Grace done any training in any of the facilities?

WarriorCanineConnection Grace comes to WCC about every other week for training.

Gayle M – MA Molly, Is there a waiting list of veterans for your dogs?

WarriorCanineConnection We don’t keep a waiting list because we don’t have a ton of dogs that are old enough to be placed. We don’t want people sitting around for years waiting for a dog from us.

Puppy Fan Can you update us on what Levi’s up to these days?

WarriorCanineConnection Abby and Levi are both doing great.

WarriorCanineConnection Levi is working on walking on the leash without pulling. He gets excited and wants to pull so we are slowly teaching him that isn’t acceptable.

mhennan How is Miss Breeze doing? I know for legal/privacy reasons we won’t see photos & I don’t always catch the trainings.

WarriorCanineConnection I think Breeze will be here Thursday.

doglove Is there a significant difference in the progress of those dogs in facilities for training daily then the others?

WarriorCanineConnection Not really. They all get training it just is different people training them. All dogs will be at different levels just because they are different dogs.

Gayle M – MA Molly, will you be training the trainers for Menlo Park?

WarriorCanineConnection We hired a very experienced trainer for Menlo Park.

Puppy Fan How do you teach him not to pull?

WarriorCanineConnection Not letting him get away with it. If he pulls we stop and make him return to the heel position. A very slow process but it works.

mhennan Molly, for the pulling is that when you are using the gentle leader? I struggle with that with my girl as she is super friendly and can’t seem to help herself

WarriorCanineConnection We are using the gentle leader on Ruby and Lucy. we will are also teaching them to walk without it but just using it as a tool right now.

DaisyDog How is Sandy’s training coming along - she looks so bright during sessions?

WarriorCanineConnection We are really happy with Sandy’s progress.

EHealy We’re all hoping for the best that there will be Olive puppies this summer, so should those of us who plan to attend the ‘Pawty in the PEC’ fill out puppy petter applications?

WarriorCanineConnection No need to fill out puppy petter apps for just the weekend of petting.

holleylover Molly – a question about Twister? Do you keep in touch with his new family? If any thing were to happen would he come back to you?

WarriorCanineConnection Twister would come back here if for any reason he can’t stay with his family. I don’t see that happening though – they love him!

texasundog Do you think the gentle leader works better than a training (“Choke” chain) collar?

WarriorCanineConnection The choke collar teaches using pain. We teach their brains – we don’t want to hurt them to make them listen.

lynnesky Who else was born in litter that was same time as Mia’s birth?

WarriorCanineConnection There were only 3 pups in that litter and they were born while I was in transition between working at another organization. I gave two of the three pups back to that organization and kept Gabe.

Puppy Fan How is our Lundy doing? Growing into his fluffiness, from the looks of last pic.

WarriorCanineConnection We love Lundy!

KYbeagle Will you have someone on the west coast raising pups or will you keep that mostly in the east so you can keep an eye on the pups?

WarriorCanineConnection Depends on what you mean by pups. No pups will be born on the West Coast.

texasundog Has your friend that shows, Misty’s breeder, seen Twister yet? What does she think of him if she has?

WarriorCanineConnection I think he gets to meet Twister tomorrow.

Paws2luv Will you be accepting any type of donations for other locations such as Menlo Park. If possible, can we also donate to those locations as well?

WarriorCanineConnection You can donate money specifically for the Menlo Park location and once we get few more dogs there we might set up an Amazon Wish List as well.

WarriorCanineConnection If you donate for the Menlo Park location the money still comes here as it is our Head Quarters. You just have to notate it is for Menlo Park.

lynnesky Is Sandy doing better with potty box?

WarriorCanineConnection Sandy is doing great with the Potty box. About 98% success

DaisyDog Sandy sure seems to run until she drops - does she have extra energy or just her pup phase?

WarriorCanineConnection She is just a puppy.

CARCA Will menlo park have an explore cam?

WarriorCanineConnection No, there won’t be any pups there and I think getting a live feed in a government building would be a no go :-)

Janet&crew-VA So will Olive’s puppies be the start up puppies for Menlo Park? Or Sandy?

WarriorCanineConnection We have one adult lab in training now. I am not sure who else will be there just yet. Maybe Sandy..maybe not. Once things are certain I’ll be sure to let you know.

pj Are the potty boxes phased out eventually or are they also used when they become service dogs?

WarriorCanineConnection Once the potty boxes are phased out they are not really used as adults.

doglove Do you use anything like Frontline with your dogs? Would you recommend it?

WarriorCanineConnection We use K9 Advantix and would never think of not using it.

WarriorCanineConnection I am always the worrier and err on the side of caution. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

puproar I came in late, so forgive me if this is a repeat: has Olive’s ultrasound been scheduled?

WarriorCanineConnection Olive’s ultrasound is next week.

doglove Sorry one more…do you use the K9 Advantix all year or just the warmer months? Thanks for the advice.

WarriorCanineConnection We use k9advantix all year round. We can’t take a chance on any fleas on a military installation or hospital setting.

texasundog Sandy still seems small to me. Is she really?

WarriorCanineConnection Sandy is a normal size.

Thanks for joining Puppy Live Chat with Warrior Canine Connection’s Molly Morelli! Here is the chat log for those who missed it, and don’t forget to tune in next week on Tuesday at 7:00 pm ET.
reddogs When will Mia be swimming in something other than a bucket?
WarriorCanineConnection I sure hope so :-). There is a great public pool around here. I grew up with a pool in my back yard so I want Mia to love to swim like I did.
mhennan I do I do! How old is Sandy? And, how does it work in regards to donations from other breeders? I mean, do you check/know the temperment (sp) history of their litters before agreeing?
WarriorCanineConnection Sandy will be 8 weeks old on the 19th (I think that is the right date). I only accept puppies from breeders that do all the health clearances required for the breed, do something with their dogs other than breed them (breed ring, agility, obedience, etc)
DeniseSteele It was mentioned that WCC may going national. What area(s) would be first?
WarriorCanineConnection We will be heading to the Ft. Drum NY area next..we think…things can change so quickly!
mhennan How is Breeze doing and how long is she hanging at PEC/healing quarters?
WarriorCanineConnection Breeze is just here until tomorrow. She and Navi live at the same facility and Navi came back for her spay today. She is feeling quite sorry for herself.
PegSharp Any updates on Twister?
WarriorCanineConnection Twister is doing fantastic! They LOVE him. He does have a facebook page..Mister Twister.
How is Derecho’s eye doing ????
WarriorCanineConnection D’s eye is doing okay. The sutures tore out in just two days so he will need to have it done again next week :-(
MtM-WA Will there be any Big Dog Graduations soon? Can you update us Rain’s Pups?
WarriorCanineConnection Our big dog grad will be in September. One of Rain’s pups, Freedom, was just neutered. Sam and Indy are undergoing additional health clearances to determine which one will have their semen collected and preserved before neutering.
WarriorCanineConnection I want to continue that line.
Terrapingirl Hi Molly. Do any of your dogs have anxiety issues with loud noises, like thunderstorms? If so, how do you ‘treat’?
WarriorCanineConnection My old girl Macy does. There isn’t much I can do – I just let her be who she is. My other dogs do not because they are all breeding dogs or retired breeding dogs – they can’t have issues like that. Fear is genetic.
WarriorCanineConnection I am not really sure of the best way to treat it. you can help by having yummy treats available when you know a noise is coming. Don’t coddle, be firm and confident. No “oh, poor baby.” That makes it worse.
PegSharp What do you think of Thundershirts as a calming influence for dogs with storm or noise issues?
Terrapingirl Yes, I try to act completely normal and don’t give her alot of attention. I wonder if the thundershirts really work?
WarriorCanineConnection I haven’t found the thundershirts to be all that helpful..but some people have.
mhennan How is Cadence’s training coming along with Ms. B? Will she and Ruby remain switched or is there a different parenting plan in the works?
WarriorCanineConnection At this point I am not sure. More than likely the switch will stay just for consistency sake.
MtM-WA What about Molly’s pups? Do you hve you eye on any of the girls as a possible “mommy” if the health clearances are received?
WarriorCanineConnection Holly’s pups :-). Maybe Penny? It is so hard to say at this teenager time.
mhennan So Ruby will stay with you and Cadence with Ms. B and fam…for now?
WarriorCanineConnection No, Ruby will move onto a different Puppy Parent or she will go back and Cadence will move to a different Puppy Parent. I don’t like to keep the dogs here.
WarriorCanineConnection They need one on one…I can’t give them that for more than a training session a day.
PeggyB Are your labs of English lines? I thought Misty was close to the ground—but the male pups seem leggy.
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, I use English labs. The boys always look leggy at this age.
ricekk It might have been asked- I joined a little late- but how is Olive doing?
WarriorCanineConnection Olive is doing great!
WhatUp Any big plans for a certain 2 yr. old’s birthday??
WarriorCanineConnection Not much. Everyday is a party to this girl.
crowie Has Lundy slimmed down or is it his coat that is giving that effect? Thanks Molly.
WarriorCanineConnection My vet who is the “fat police” and always finds the fat dogs even said that he was mostly coat.
pj Do you have a plan for who will be Mommy next after Olive?
WarriorCanineConnection I have a good friend (that gave me Holly) that is sending me some girls for potential breeding. One is a 1/2 sib to Holly. I am making arrangements to get them here soon just in case Olive isn’t pregnant.
WarriorCanineConnection I mean, if Olive isn’t pregnant I’d breed one of them in May/June when they come in season.
Donnalynn47 I don’t know if this has been asked? How old are all your dogs, Molly?
WarriorCanineConnection Macy will be 12 on the 21st, Huff and Rain are 8, Holly is 7, Misty is 5 and Olive is 3.
DeniseSteele When do you expect Sandy to arrive?
WarriorCanineConnection Sandy should be here Sunday.
mhennan Will “D” eventually be spending time at his puppy parent’s work or will he continue to spend the days with you and his gf, Cheryl?
WarriorCanineConnection D will eventually be at work but his Puppy Parent mom is off for the summer so he will stay with them at home too.
TiaPerez Molly how many dogs do you have at your facility? My family and I fell in love with Holly, Misty and all the pups. We are now inquiring about getting a golden for our family well.
flipfloppingal How long will Sandy stay with you before she goes to PP?
WarriorCanineConnection I am hoping to only have Sandy for a few weeks…but the Puppy Parent I had in mind for her might not be ready until late May. I need to decide if I want to find a new parent or wait.
Terrapingirl How long do the first puppy parents typically keep them?
WarriorCanineConnection It varies how long the pups are with puppy parents.
PegSharp Confused a little here Sandy and Lundy related?
WarriorCanineConnection No, Sandy and Lundy are not related.
dawgmom07 do you think this past tacking of Derecho’s eye will hold now and what could be done if it doesn’t hold again?
WarriorCanineConnection I think this will hold D’s eye. I dont’ know what the next step for him would be.
razorbackal Will you be using the patio pen this summer?
WarriorCanineConnection I haven’t decided about the patio yet. My guess is yes, we will still use it.
sandydogs From a service dog training perspective, how do you deal with instinctive behavior like dogs wanting to chase squirrels or birds?
WarriorCanineConnection sandydogs – I try very hard to breed away from predatory behaviors. Those instinctual behaviors are not able to be ‘trained out’ but can be suppressed and managed. One of the many reasons why we do not use rescue dogs.
sandydogs Do you use Riley & Beans to introduce the pups to cats?
WarriorCanineConnection I ended up with Riley and Bean from my old job. I really, really, really love my cats and totally over protective of them.
mhennan In prepping, is the plan to continue with live chat Tuesdays?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, we will be back to normal next week.
ShellyNutterConsolo Are Misty’s pups extremely smart or is this normal behavior for a lab this young? They seem like they catch on so quickly in the training, yet they are still pretty young.
WarriorCanineConnection Puppies are always quick and eager learners. That is why we train them young!
TiaPerez Are golden and Labradors temperament good when it comes to kids? I see how well your dogs do with Mia and by the way she is a sweetheart. My daughter was bitten as a baby and now she wants a puppy but I want to make sure that we pick the right breed.
mhennan I know it’s last minute…Ruby has a gentle leader, is that more effective than the harness she has and why?
WarriorCanineConnection We only use the gentle leader to fix bad habits like pulling on the leash. We train them while using it and wean them back onto a collar. It is just a tool.

Thanks for joining Puppy Live Chat with Warrior Canine Connection’s Molly Morelli! Here is the chat log for those who missed it, and don’t forget to tune in next week on Tuesday at 7:00 pm ET.

Thanks for joining this week’s live chat with Warrior Canine Connection:
crowie How are Derecho’s eyes, Molly? There seems to be a little concern over one of them.
WarriorCanineConnection Derecho’s right eye is 100% normal. His left eye has a small area (maybe 20%) of roll in. I have a feeling we will tack that one area. Because it has improved so much I really think that is all he will need.
puproar Is Lundy in the pen now?
WarriorCanineConnection Lundy has been scheduled to go with Marshall since we knew he was coming.
Jersey Girl How long will Lundy stay then?
WarriorCanineConnection Probably until Friday
GaltDaisy Have Twister and Derecho been with the big dogs at the river yet?
WarriorCanineConnection The water is SO cold. I don’t want to go down there and get wet :-). They will all get the chance to swim soon enough.
CARCA Will the puppies who have gone be returning for the same training with Cheryl? WarriorCanineConnection All of the Weather Litter + Bea will be attending weekly sessions with Cheryl and the PP working together. I will be involved but it is very hard for me to focus on anything with Mia around :-)
Jersey Girl How is Lundy adjusting to his new home and brothers this afternoon?
WarriorCanineConnection Lundy hasn’t missed a beat. He is such a sweet boy and is adjusting well.
crowie Any news on PP’s for Twister and Derecho?
WarriorCanineConnection We have a long line of applicants, but I need it to be the right fit for the dog. Twister needs someone that is a leader and won’t allow him to get away with anything.
Aly14 Are you looking to recruit other dogs like Bea and Lundy to add to WCC’s program?
WarriorCanineConnection I am getting one more female golden next month and then I am going to stop taking in pups until after Olive’s litter.
chelsie’s mom Is Olive supposed to be “in heat” next month?
WarriorCanineConnection I expect Olive in heat mid-april. She was last in season oct 9th and she cycles every 6 months give or take 10 days
CARCA Do many PP repeat the experience? (I could never give up the puppy!!!)
WarriorCanineConnection We are not old enough of a program to have repeat raisers but in my other job I had many repeats.
jch Lundy is SO MUCH larger than our pups, what was his birth weight?
WarriorCanineConnection Lundy is big, but he also has a ton of hair. His coat is at that odd mix of adult coat and puppy coat
Brinsmom MOLLY - Do you know how much longer this live cam will be operating for this litter, and is it a definite for Olive’s litter?
WarriorCanineConnection I think we will be leaving the cam up from now until Olive’s litter. We will be showing training sessions, big dogs, etc.
lynnesky Regarding training last Saturday, what training method is used to correct the undesirable behaviors of the “middleschoolers?” Do you say “no,” or is it an action?
WarriorCanineConnection We do not use physical corrections. If we place a dog with a Veteran with no arms how can we expect him to correct a dog? The dogs need to respond to a firm no - or they shouldn’t be a service dog.
Cossack2 Does it seem unusual to you that Lundy doesn’t join the puppy pile? I wonder if Lundy is lonely for his littermates?
WarriorCanineConnection Lundy will join them soon. His whole world has been turned upside down. I am amazed he is doing this well!
Kaysy I only saw Lundy briefly, but he looks like he will have quite a coat as an adult. Do warriors groom the dogs themselves?
WarriorCanineConnection I think he will have a bit of coat, but it will be proper and not mat and dry easily.
2rots Twister and Derecho at this point are still litter trained and not going outside on a regular schedule to void. How will this work for new PP’s? Will the litter pan go with them and every time the pups go to the litter tray PP’s will scoot them outside?
WarriorCanineConnection The pups will pick up on pottying outside easily. That isn’t something I worry about.
katiehiggins How many litters per year does WCC hope to achieve? (Sorry if that is a weird way of asking it - I am just trying to understand.)
WarriorCanineConnection I can handle 2-3 litters per year right now.
Jessie’sMom With this litter, have you introduced any new toys or treat dispensers that you really like?
WarriorCanineConnection I love the purple tug-a-jugs. I LOVE the filled bones - those are a luxury we wouldn’t have without you all.
Slipper Other than a lot of extra paperwork and red tape, what does the accreditation as a service organization entitle WCC to?
WarriorCanineConnection Assistance Dogs International is the governing board of assistance dog organizations. It is kind of the gold standard of service dog organizations.
lynnesky Will Lundy be crated tonight in the pen with the others?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, I will move a large crate in for Lundy.
WarriorCanineConnection I forgot to ask his breeder if he was used to being in a crate. If he throws a fit…well, he has to learn somehow :-)
puproar Lucy, Levi, and Abby are so beautiful. Is Lucy in a training program now? Are Levi and Abby still at NICoE?
WarriorCanineConnection Lucy, Ruby and Grace are being trained by Puppy Parents and us. Penny, Levi and Abby are in Warrior Training programs. Lucy and Ruby live so close to WCC that they will be coming here to work with Warrior groups.
jch Are you amazed at how far WCC (and its support) has come just in the last year (since HHD) - Home Depot, Zazzle, Amazon wish lists (I remember you saying A LONG time ago that you didn’t like to ask for things). Things worked out for the best, I believe!
WarriorCanineConnection We still have to remind ourselves that this is real! It is amazing!
Brinsmom How pleased are you with HHD pups and their training so far? Are they all quick learners?
WarriorCanineConnection I am loving all of HHD but I hate the middle school age. CARCA Why do you hate the middle school age?
WarriorCanineConnection Because they are like middle school children. Adult bodies but immature thought processes.
mhennan Now that you have had an opportunity to do group training in the PEC, is the space still working as well has expected?
WarriorCanineConnection The PEC is WAY better than we could have ever expected!
crowie Someone mentioned on chat last night that they sponsor a puppy. Is this something we don’t all know about or a bad use of words by the person?
WarriorCanineConnection I have no idea who that person is or what they were talking about!
puproar Are any of Misty’s pups in one of the warrior training programs yet, or are they all puppy-parent-trained and WCC-trained at this time?
WarriorCanineConnection Breeze is in one of our newest programs with Wounded Warriors.
Gayle M - MA Molly, what credentials does a trainer need to be part of the program, do they need a SW background as well?
WarriorCanineConnection We like people that have a clinical background in some sort of mental health and also dog training.
Jessie’sMom To meet the need, how many dogs do you believe you will need to provide say, in the next five years?
WarriorCanineConnection I don’t think one program could ever meet the needs. This needs to be a group effort among many service dog organizations like WCC and SDP.
CanadianWCCfan Does Mia realize when puppies leave? Does she ever comment about them?
WarriorCanineConnection Mia is so used to dogs coming and going that she doesn’t even really react.
chelsie’s mom Do you know when the new Kuranda beds are coming?
WarriorCanineConnection The new Kurandas are here. I want to put the big one together and save the four regular size ones for Olives litter. No use in using them all at the same time!
Janet&crew-VA Is it possible to screen goldens for cancer?I lost one to cancer and was told by the vet goldens have the highest cancer rate and 60% develop cancer. I fell in love with Bea and want one.
WarriorCanineConnection You can’t screen for cancer but you can certainly choose from lines that have less cancer. Lundy’s mother goes back to the breeders foundation bitch that lived to be 19 years old!
Smittysmom You must get emotionally attached to the pups. How do you deal with them going to new parents?
WarriorCanineConnection I do get attached. I get so attached and love them so much that I want what is best for them to thrive and be happy. That is to head off and get one on one attention.
Sarah Williams At what age do they retire?
WarriorCanineConnection Age of retirement varies.
gbao418 Are Indy and Sam (who passed their tests) going to be bred, too, like Olive?
WarriorCanineConnection I will not keep Indy or Sam out for breeding but will have semen collected and frozen for future use. Hey - you asked :-)

This week’s live chat was tinged with sadness as we paid tribute to Celticat, a regular puppy watcher and valuable member of the community. If you want to pay your respects, consider making a donation to the Service Dog Project or Warrior Canine Connection in her honor.
MtM-WA Molly, when the girl pups have their first cycle how will the PP handle this? Keep them home or?
WarriorCanineConnection My golden females tend to cycle starting at around 11 months.
crowie Molly how many more evenings is Breeze with you?
WarriorCanineConnection Breeze will leave on Thursday.
lynnesky Have the Kuranda beds you won in the contest arrived? Did you get to choose size?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, the beds have arrived!! I need to put them together…I am not going to put all five together at once though.
crowie Molly, is that staining still around Derecho’s eyes and will it disappear with time? He looks great though.
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, the staining will disappear. The staining is just from the tears.
puproar Molly, when does the new boy pup arrive? That info was omitted from last week’s post on the blog, so gotta ask again.
WarriorCanineConnection Lundy will be here Monday or Tuesday.
Terrapingirl Molly, do you ever have plans to work with any other breeds, like German Shepherds? Or do you stay with Goldens & Labs? WarriorCanineConnection Shepherds are very difficult in both temperament and health. Guide Dogs for the Blind (one of the largest Guide Dog schools in the country) even stopped working with them due to not having successful health to go with temperament.
WarriorCanineConnection We also need to use dogs that are approachable and friendly looking. We do not want people crossing to the other side of the street when they see a Veteran coming with his service dog.
lynnesky Which one of Holly’s 2nd litter is with you?
WarriorCanineConnection Gabe from Holly’s second litter is here with me.
Terrapingirl How many ‘adult’ dogs are at your house at any one time? Do the big dogs all sleep in kennels or do they have the run of the place?
WarriorCanineConnection We have 6-7 adults at any given time. All sleep in our bedroom with us.
crowie How are plans going for Twister’s Puppy Parents? Thanks Molly.
WarriorCanineConnection We have been working so hard to make Flurry, Breeze, Blizzard and Bea’s placements successful we have not pushed on too hard finding Twister and Derecho a home. We have applicants and interviews will be done next week.
weinke Molly do you use any kind of an eyewash when your dogs are playing outside and it’s dusty or the pollen is high? If so, what do you recommend? WarriorCanineConnection I don’t use any eyewash.
Slipper Even though you have multitudes of dogs on and in your property, how do you keep them all so happy? Are there EVER tiffs and spats amongst them or are they just even tempered and civilized, never show discord?
WarriorCanineConnection I have ONE very serious, unbreakable rule. Get along or get out. No ifs, ands or buts. I don’t care if they do or don’t have testicles or a uterus, they must get along.
WarriorCanineConnection Service dogs will need to be able to settle quietly under a table and at times with strange dogs. I once went on a Service Dogs Cruise. We had 30+ dogs on the ship (Old Gabe and Huff were there).
WarriorCanineConnection They had to lay under the dinner table with dogs they had never met before and they did just fine. I have ZERO tolerance for any aggression at any time. Can you tell I am serious about this? :-)
Terrapingirl So you let them work out any disagreements on their own?
WarriorCanineConnection We do not have disagreements. I will not ever breed a dog that has aggression.
roadrunner Have you ever had a dog that didn’t get along and had to be sent elsewhere?
WarriorCanineConnection ****knock on wood**** No, I have never had to enforce the rule. I am careful about my breeding decisions and choose dogs with zero aggression at all times.
WarriorCanineConnection Fighting dogs or dogs showing aggression towards people. Two serious issues for a service dog.
Puptalk Molly - Did you notice an uptick in the followers of WCC after all the news coverage on PEC opening?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, I think the wonderful media coverage was helpful. I have to give kudos to our Director of Communications, Patty Kennedy. She put together that whole event and secured all of the media.
CandaceAJohnson Molly, Cadence is a beautiful looking dog. Do you plan on breeding her in the future?
WarriorCanineConnection Cadence is a wonderful little girl! I love so many things about her temperament but we have had to work her through some low confidence issues. She will be spayed before she is placed as a service dog but won’t be bred.
lynnesky Do the big dogs crave human attention from you, Rick and Mia? Or are they happy just with each other?
WarriorCanineConnection We spend time with the adult dogs as to the volunteers. Actually, Holly is going on a few day vacation with a volunteer. She will enjoy her time away but be happy to come home too.
luvspringers Molly, have you every had to deal with a dog with colitis? If so, any suggestions? Sometimes owners have ideas that the veterinarians don’t have. WarriorCanineConnection Depends what is causing the colitis. I have had good luck with Tylan powder and probiotics. Tylan must be given for 6-8 weeks.
doglove What kind of treats do you use when you’re training the dogs? I noticed the puppies get many in their training for reinforcement. Is it Kibble or just small pieces?
WarriorCanineConnection We use soft, chewy treats that are not full of junk. I like the Red Barn food rolls cut up into tiny pieces or Zukes naturals.
tuppycat-NZ Molly, you mentioned Cadence going on vacation with a volunteer. Does that happen often with your dogs?
WarriorCanineConnection Holly is going on vacation. She is doing therapy work while on vacation.
brandy’smom I have a 2 year old golden that I think is too heavy. How much do you feed your adult dogs each day? She is on adult blue buffalo. WarriorCanineConnection Most of my spayed females eat 2 cups total per day. In the summer if they are exercising more they might get 2.5 cups. WarriorCanineConnection Make a fist and run your finger over the area between your knuckles and finger joint. That is what the ribs of your dog should feel like.

This was one of the last Puppy Cam live chats we’ll host for Misty’s litter. Thanks for all your great questions!
texasundog Hello Molly. Have the puppies been micro-chipped yet?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, the pups are micro-chipped right around 8 weeks. I usually do it myself but this time I brought them with me to the 8 week vet appointment and had Dr. Gregory do it.
mhennan Molly, what is the brand of marrow bone you give to your pups and big dogs?
WarriorCanineConnection I use Redbarn Marrow bones. I trust that company and they have not had recalls.
WarriorCanineConnection I do sometimes refill with water soaked kibble, a small amount of peanut butter or maybe some canned food.
karmackayo Hi Molly. Where do you get the props for the photo shoots? Is there a puppy picture props catalog?
WarriorCanineConnection Keekaburro gets all the props. Usually Party City and Hobby Lobby. No, there are no puppy prop catalogs. She does a lot of painting and crafting.
lynnesky Hi Molly! Can you help us understand why pups go to work with their parents-don’t they go to NICoe? Or is that a bit later in their training?
WarriorCanineConnection There are only so many training spots at each of the programs (Walter Reed, NiCOE and Ft. Belvoir, VA). However, just because those spots are full I can’t stop breeding dogs.
WarriorCanineConnection The demand for service dogs is huge, as are the # of other installations wanting training programs.
WarriorCanineConnection All of the dogs get training, just only some are trained by Wounded Warriors. At some point during the training process each of the dogs will be trained by a Wounded Warrior.
Q: How are microchips inserted?
WarriorCanineConnection Microchips are inserted via a needle and syringe - the chip itself is the size of a grain of rice.
dawgmom07 Any chance of any programs coming to the NY area?
WarriorCanineConnection I need to have dogs ready to move into those daily training programs when funding is available to open new training programs.
WhatUp How is Derecho & is he with permanent PP ?
WarriorCanineConnection Derecho is doing fantastic! He doesn’t need his cone anymore and his eyes look great. The tack did what it was supposed to do and his head is developing and his eyelids are not rolling inward.
WarriorCanineConnection Mr. Derecho is with a volunteer. He will come back next week and go to his permanent puppy home sometime in the week or two following that.
Wuvtai5 How many working service vests does a dog go through as they grow? Who makes them for you and are they donated at cost or no cost?
WarriorCanineConnection A dog usually goes through 3 or 4 vests. Some can be reused because they only wear them for a short time. Some get worn out by washing and wearing. We have someone make the vests. They are made out of old uniforms of our Wounded Warrior Trainers.
KaseyL79 Hi Molly: Are “rescue” dogs ever considered as soldier canine companions? There are so many in shelters.
WarriorCanineConnection There are very few shelter dogs out there that fit the criteria needed for a working service dog. Health and temperament are a huge concern and it is hard to find that without selectively breeding.
WarriorCanineConnection Sometimes there are…but to spend so much time searching for them would leave our wait list even longer.
MusicalMillie Hello! I was just wondering what type of things would be the biggest benefit if they were donated? For puppies or you or puppy parents?
WarriorCanineConnection We love donations that support our dogs. Many non-profits do not have the funding for the “extras” and we are so lucky to have the support of all of you so our dogs get spoiled!
GaltDaisy Have you or would you ever breed a golden to a lab and vise versa?
WarriorCanineConnection I am not a fan of the Golden/Lab Crosses. I have never had success with that although some organizations have. I choose to just have purebred dogs so I have some idea what to expect!
dawgmom07 Molly, how long have you been involved with this program?
WarriorCanineConnection I have been in the service dog industry for about 10 years now. My husband and I started WCC almost two years ago.
vwester I am sort of new to all of this. Only on since end of Dec. What is HHD Raindance please?
WarriorCanineConnection HHD is Holly’s Half Dozen, our litter from last summer. All of the dogs that I breed have the prefix “Raindance” before their registered name. They are asking for the pups registered names that we decided on.
CARCA Regarding Bea’s night poops - is it possible that the crating is causing anxiety and therefore poops?
WarriorCanineConnection Bea has had two night poops. That really isn’t that much. Last night I think was due to the fact that the crate was too big and she didn’t feel secure.
Q: Do you have a limit on how many times you will breed a dog?
WarriorCanineConnection I breed a girl once. If she isn’t a good mom or doesn’t enjoy it she is done. If she is a good mom she gets bred again. If I like the pups from her first litter she would get bred a third time, MAYBE a fourth. Four is pretty much my absolute.
Q: Misty’s pups are built so well. Will she have another litter?
WarriorCanineConnection This is Misty’s third and final litter.
Q: Molly, if I may ask, what were the problems the two pups from HHD were having with their food and what adjustments were made to their diets to fix them?
WarriorCanineConnection I am not exactly sure what the problem was. They were having loose stool…not increased frequency like diarrhea. Just loose stool. We added an antibiotic called Tylan powder and all is well again.
Q: Many breeders have 5 litters, which I believe is too much. Isn’t this harmful to the mother?
WarriorCanineConnection I don’t want to comment on what others do. I make decisions on what works for me and my ethics. I don’t think it is harmful though.
Q: Probably a dumb question, but is it genetically okay for a female to be impregnated by her father’s sperm? Does incest count for dogs?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, incest counts for dogs too.
Q: How’s my love Levi doing? How much longer until he is matched with his forever warrior?
WarriorCanineConnection Most boys are not ready to graduate until at least two. Boys take much longer to mature.
Q: Molly, the other night you made a comment about the puppies having down time and then referred to dogs who develop separation anxiety. Do you agree in some cases it is bad breeding and not poor training?
WarriorCanineConnection FOR SURE!! Fear and anxiety have a huge hereditary basis. I will never, ever breed a dog that has any kind of fear. It will surely pass down to her kids.
Q: Do you think having the big crate open all the time helped these pups adjust faster/better to individual crating?
WarriorCanineConnection I am not sure. It seems like it did…some litters just like the crate more than others.
Q: Molly, do you see any difference between Goldens and Labs and if so, what?
WarriorCanineConnection There are many differences between goldens and labs, but one is not superior to the other.
Q: Do the pups remember each other as they get older and don’t see each other for long periods of time?
WarriorCanineConnection Yes, the pups do remember each other. The sense of smell is very powerful!
Q: Molly, why is 5 weeks old the “best” age for pups?
WarriorCanineConnection 5 weeks is my favorite age because they are up and running around but they are not super bitey yet.
